The theory in fact, is traceable to Bauhaus colour specialist, Johannus Itten (known as the "Einstein of Colour") who, in the 1930's established that painters tend to gravitate towards colours that toned with their own skin pigmentation.  His observations - the fact that certain colour intensities were more appealing on certain skin tones than others - inspired the research which has continued from there to become the refined scientifically based concept that COLOURS presents today.

The original colours system was copyrighted to ensure that the quality and consistancy could not be compromised.  However, with this highly successful industry came spinoff companies that tried to imitate the colour system.  Due to the copyright they cannot use the correct format which has led to people being incorrectly analysed.
