History:

Sports massage has had a major impact on athletes since the 1970's with the Finnish distance runner Lasse Viren winning the 5,000/10,000 metre double at the 1972 Olympics. His secret he said was his daily massage.  Now, most sporting teams have a massage therapist as part of their entourage such as the All Blacks or NZ Women's cricket team right through to individual athletes.

 

The strokes of sports massage are not greatly different to other massage, but are applied in a sport specific way and take into account the different stages of training and performance.
